Background
The Covenant School is a Christian private school, located in the Green Hills neighborhood, that educates students from pre-kindergarten to the sixth grade. It was founded in 2001 as a ministry of Nashville's Covenant Presbyterian Church, a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America, and typically has around 200 students enrolled.[7]Shooting
The shooting began during the morning at around 10:13 a.m. CDT.[8][9] According to police, the shooter, Audrey Hale, drove a Honda Fit to the school, parking it in the lot.[10] Hale then shot through a side door to gain entry into the building,[10][11] armed with an assault-style rifle, an assault-style pistol, and a handgun.[12][13][11] Hale traversed the second floor of the school before opening fire. When police officers arrived, they began to evacuate the first floor until they heard gunshots coming from the second floor.[14][15] They quickly moved there and encountered Hale, who was still firing. The officers engaged and fatally shot Hale at 10:27 a.m.[16] Three children and three staff members were killed in the attack,[17] with one police officer suffering a hand injury from shattered glass.[1]
Immediate aftermath
A reunification center was created at the Woodmont Baptist Church by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, with surviving students arriving by school bus in the afternoon. Parents were asked to provide information regarding their children, while the children were counted in a separate area and then reunited with their parents.[18]Victims
Six people – three children and three staff members – were killed in the mass shooting. Five of the victims were pronounced dead at a local hospital, with the sixth victim being pronounced dead at the scene.[19] The victims were identified as students Evelyn Dieckhaus, William Kinney, and Hallie Scruggs, all 9 years old; substitute teacher Cynthia Peak, 61; custodian Mike Hill, 61; and head of school Katherine Koonce, 60.[20]Perpetrator
The shooter was identified as Audrey Elizabeth Hale,[21] a 28-year-old resident of Nashville who police say identified as transgender.[2][12] Hale had no previous criminal record[2] and attended the school at an early age.[22] According to The Tennessean, Hale was a trans man who used male pronouns.[23] A police spokesperson said Hale was assigned female at birth,[24] but had listed male pronouns on a LinkedIn profile. Hale was an illustrator and graphic designer who graduated from the Nossi College of Art and Design in 2022.[11][25] A neighbor said that Hale lived with his parents.[26]Investigators
searched Hale's residence,[2] finding a detailed map of the school with
potential entry points and a manifesto.[15][21] Hale is alleged to have
undertaken reconnaissance before committing the attack.[27] Police said Hale
had originally considered targeting another location but had decided not to
carry out the attack due to the level of security there.[21] Hale sent a
message to a former middle school basketball teammate at 9:57 a.m. the day of
the shooting, stating that he planned to die by suicide.[28]
Investigation
The Metro Nashville Police Department is leading the investigation into the
shooting, assisted by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of
Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.[29] A search warrant executed at
the residence of Hale resulted in the seizure of two shotguns (one being
sawed-off) and other evidence.[30]
Reactions
President Joe Biden spoke about the shooting at a press conference, calling it "sick," and urged Congress to take further action on gun safety legislation.[7]Nashville
Mayor John Cooper issued a statement in which he highlighted the long history
of school shootings and offered his condolences to those affected.[15] Several
notable Nashville musicians such as Mickey Guyton, Margo Price, and Sheryl Crow
responded to the shooting, offering their condolences and anger about the
continuation of school shootings.[31]
A
survivor of the Highland Park parade shooting of July 2022, who was in the area
on vacation, was recorded after a news conference about the shooting asking
reporters, "Aren't you guys tired of being here and having to cover all of
these mass shootings?" and expressed her anger over the continuation of
mass shootings.[32]
